Oster Versa 1400 Review – A Professional Grade Blender For Less Than $200

Most of the Oster Blenders I see when doing window shopping inside malls are of the budget variety that are below $100.

But when I saw this professional grade blender and looked at the price, I was pleasantly surprised that it costs more than half less than top of the line brands like a Blendtec and Vitamix.

That’s commercial type power for less than $200.

This is great for a few reasons. First not everyone can afford to spend $400 to $500 on a blender.

Second even if this is a mid-priced variant, it still comes with a 7 year warranty. The same warranty that a Vitamix gives you.

The biggest caveat though is that this machine is made in China as opposed to a Vitamix that is made in the USA.

So if that is a concern for you it might discourage you from buying this. But if the country of origin is not an issue then is maybe one of the best bargains out there.

First let’s look at the features of this budget full  size blender…

  • Equipped with a powerful 1,400 watt motor
  • Backed with a 7 year warranty
  • Has a 64 ounce BPA free jug
  • Rotary control with medium, high and a pulse setting (also has 3 pre-programmed settings – smoothie, soup, dips/spreads)
  • Metal drive system ensures longevity
  • 17.6 inches tall
  • 7 year warranty

Pros

  • Gives you a mid-priced option (below $250) but still have a long 7 year warranty
  • Still comes with a strong 1,400 motor
  • The shorter jar means you don’t need a lot of room to store this
  • Metal drive will last longer
  • Cover has an opening that will allow you to add ingredients without taking off the whole cover

Cons

  • Unlike the Vitamix, this machine will not be able to mix dough
  • Not made in the USA (if you’re that finicky)
  • When you push the tamper all the way it will hit the blade so you have to be careful
  • Hard to read markings

What to expect from the Oster Versa 1400?

Oster really put on their thinking caps when designing this machine. It has a nice sturdy base and easy to use controls that’s easy to figure out.

Features

Low profile jar

When you add the low profile jar, you’ll have a product that’s easier to store than something taller like a Vitamix.

If you prefer a slimmer but taller jar, Oster also has this option available.

64 ounce capacity

You can still make a decent amount of smoothies – 64 ounces to be exact so you will be able to make drinks or soups for 2 or 3 people.

Another difference from this and cheaper blenders is that it allows you to crush ice without adding any water.

But only up to 6 large ice cubes, anything over than you need to add water.

Interface

At the base you’ll see a rotary control that allows you to manually control the speed of the blade between medium and high. And it also comes with a pulse option, if you want to chop vegetables.

Controls

Powering this professional grade blender is a pretty potent 1,400 watt motor that will spin the blades at over 20,000 rpm at the high setting.

Here’s what to expect in terms of features…

What can this make?

Aside from mixing pizza dough, the Versa can pretty much blend any fruit, peanut or vegetable you throw into it.

Combine the strong motor and the 4 blade system this machine is capable of making frozen desserts, smoothies, protein shakes, coffee, crushed ice, hot soup, almond butter and even almond milk.

Let’s look at how it performed one by one.

Almond milk

Making almond milk (using almonds, dates and water)…

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ryscqg32P4E

It resulted in a grainy texture not as fine as a Vitamix or a Blendtec. But if you don’t mind your almond milk a little thicker then Oster would be a great budget option.

Nut/almond butter

How about some almond butter using raw almond (it was soaked then dried and roasted) and coconut oil…

While it was able to make almond butter, it took a while to get the consistency just right.

You’ll notice that the jar is slimmer than the photos you see in this review. It’s a different variant called the Oster Versa BLSTVB-000-000 with the slim jar.

Both of these variants have the same motor, the only difference is the shape of the jar that comes along with it.

Ice cream

Making ice cream compared against the Blendtec

The Blendtec did a better job in terms of having a harder consistency compared to the soggy texture of the Oster which shouldn’t be an issue when you store it inside a freezer.

Smoothie

Now to the smoothie test again versus the Blendtec (this is an all fruit smoothie)…

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zI_AADRvQ7o

Again, Blendtec wins in terms of smoothness but it’s really a non-issue unless you’re very particular with that aspect.

How about a green smoothie…

Another green smoothie test versus the Blendtec using celery, kale, grapes, half a frozen banana and some ice…

And lastly here’s another green smoothie test this time against the Nutribullet

Is it easy to clean?

Like with all other blenders, this machine is very easy to clean.

Just fill up the jar with water until it’s half full, add a few drops of Joy then pulse it for 30 seconds then rinse thoroughly. That’s it.

The only issue I see with cleaning this is when you make something oily like nut butter, you may have to use a sponge and/or a brush to thoroughly scrub this and clean the oily residue.

Oster didn’t specify if this is dishwasher safe but it’s not a big deal seriously, you’ll be better off hand washing this.

Warranty

Here’s the best part. Even if it costs more than half less than the Vitamix, it still comes with the same 7 year warranty. Talk about standing behind your product.

Consumer Reviews

In terms of performance consumers like how this product performed, one even gave a detailed review on how the Versa and the Vitamix 5200 are different.

While both have the same power on paper, the Vitamix’s motor base is considerably heavier and produces way more torque than the Versa.

This is a big reason why the Vitamix is capable of mixing dough and is pretty consistent in terms of smoothness.

Oster’s jar can break

The Vitamix’s jar is also thicker and virtually shatter-proof while the Oster is not as thick and can possibly break if you drop it on the ground.

So there that’s to answer questions about the price difference between the Vitamix and Oster.

But if you don’t mind those limitations, this is a great bargain as a number of consumers mentioned that in terms of performance, it isn’t far off.

Huge motor base

The base though is huge and if you add the height of the jar it measures approximately 17.6 inches, so get your tape measure and check if it’ll fit under your countertop.

As for the potential issues, some consumers have reported leaking from the base of the jar. That’s always a risk with blenders using plastic jars.

Other potential issues

Another issue would be overheating the motor since it doesn’t have as much torque as a Vitamix. But with it has a fail-safe feature that will automatically shut down the motor if you run it too long.

The tamper length could also present some issues if you push it too far as it could hit the blades and scrap plastic on your smoothie.

This is not good but one consumer said that the new lids that come with this model are thicker and the tamper should not scrap the blades.

Where can I buy this?

You can buy the Oster Versa in Amazon for less than $200! It’s eligible for the free 2-day shipping if you join Prime. Amazon also sells extended warranties of up to 4 years if you want that extra peace of mind.

Buying this direct from Oster will set you back around $250.

To Wrap up

This blender would be great for families with 3 or 4 members because it comes with a large 64 ounce jar that is capable of making a lot of smoothies and homemade desserts.

The best part of this blender is the price, if you buy this in Amazon, it can be had for a bargain – around $200.

Even at that price range it still comes with a 7 year warranty so this shows you that Oster really stands behind their product.

This is great because it gives you the option to buy a blender with the same power as a Vitamix at a fraction of the price with the same warranty.

A warning though, it will not give you the same consistency as the Vitamix but the difference is negligible, people who couldn’t afford the Vitamix, opted for this and were very happy with their purchase.

If you’re looking for a heavy duty blender capable of making green smoothies, frozen desserts or even nut butter give the Oster Versa a look. It will save you a few hundred dollars easy.

  1. Thanks for your review, Garrick! I stumbled upon this blender at Amazon and thought I’d google some additional reviews. Very helpful — I am going to order one of these!

  2. Just wanted to say thanks. I have a nutribullet now and like it but was looking into a vitamix to get my green smoothies even smoother. But then I came across the oster versa and really liked your comparison. Much appreciated.

  3. Watched blendtec vs oster versa comparison & blend tech did appear smoother.
However, the blendtec was much noisier & that base was dancing all over her stovetop & the mess in the lid was, well, a mess

  4. I have this blender and I absolutely love it! I use it every single day for smoothies, banana nice cream, mashed potatoes, soup, waffles…Everything! Just have to comment on their incredible warranty. My first one started leaking oil after 8 months of using the machine nonstop, I called the company and they mailed me a completely new blender within a few days!I have been extremely pleased with this amazing versitile blender and it’s warranty policy.

  5. How. Loud is it? I love in small place, had to give up Vitamix because it would wake my husband up (he works nights).
